Kids, bee careful out there

Southern yellowjacket, Vespula squamosa

wasps

(Last Updated On: October 22, 2014)

Next to honey bees, yellowjacket wasps are one of the most important stinging insects in Texas. Colonies are most often a problem in late summer and fall, when they grow large enough to become a nuisance. Typical mature colonies will contain thousands of adult wasps and be found underground or in other void spaces, such as in rotting railroad crossties.
